Knowledge of our oceans is still limited, not least, because detailed observations are far more challenging to carry out than, for example, in the atmosphere. Autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV) interacting with other robotic platforms on the surface, in the air and in space open up completely new opportunities for research and monitoring of the ocean space. Professor of applied mathematics, Inga Berre at the University of Bergen, heads a VISTA research centre that will develop basic knowledge about how fluids flow in porous media. The knowledge can be applied to groundwater management, production of hydrocarbons and geothermal energy, subsurface storage of energy, and storage of CO2 or wastewater. Read more (...)
The Vista Centers will be formally launched at the University of Bergen and The Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim. Chair of the board, Ole M. Sejersted will present the new centers on behalf of the VISTA-board.
for her development of an environmentally friendly material that prevents the formation of is and frost on airplanes. Watch the shortmovie about her project:
Ever since he was a boy, Vista scholar Lars Hov Odsæter has enjoyed two things: skiing and maths. He made great strides in his research and a professional career in cross-country skiing, but finally it was maths that came out on top. Lars took his civil engineering degree in six and half years, specializing in industrial mathematics. He wrote his project paper and his master's thesis for Statoil.
Maria Amelie has interviewed Lars Hov Odsæter and five other VISTA scholars; Henrik Anfinsen, Charmain Hamilton, Casey William Nixon, Jack Leo and Elisa Magnanelli. Follow the above links to the interviews.
It has been a unique experience to get to know these young and talented researchers. As a journalist one usually interviews researchers who are at the end of their careers, when they have received prizes and become famous. I have met young people with passion and dedication for science, and I am sure we will hear more from them in the future. - Maria Amelie
VISTA supports at any time approximately 20 projects on PhD and Post Doc level, in addition to one VISTA professorship, within the research areas listed below. Close to NOK 25 million will be allocated to VISTA projects in 2018.
The two VISTA scholars Sissel Slettemark Mundal and Lars Løseth tell their stories:

The VISTA seminar with invited researchers have discussed the consequences of harvesting resources from and in the ocean, in particular from the bottom of the ocean, also called the seabed. Not only discussing what the scientists already know, but also mapping uncertainties and what we need-to-know, and how new technologies can be sustainable in order to care take ocean health, was central for this year's international VISTA seminar.
(02.12.2021) MoreThe theme of the seminar was: global energy transition and the 1,5 degree target.
(02.12.2021) MoreThis year's topic was "The Role of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) in closing the carbon window". Presentations from the seminar are now available.
